New Music: PHWOAR – Pleasure Island

Birmingham duo PHWOAR don’t fit neatly into any one genre, but tracks like Pleasure Island have a real punk attitude.

The band described Pleasure Island as a “twisted ode to the UK’s decline,” written from the point of view of people who love their country and its foibles but still seek to shine a spotlight on its flaws.

Bucolic images are juxtaposed with decay and distractions, with references to Pinocchio’s infamous Pleasure Island readily apparent.  PHWOAR make a glorious racket for just two people, with punk and garage rock combined and clashing like a fairground doom loop. It’ll get your juices flowing, but the rest is up to you.
