New Music: Pictureplane – Heaven is a State of Mind

Though Brooklynite Pictureplane – producer Travis Egedy – may have set out to create something reminiscent of 80s dark synthpop, Heaven is a State of Mind is something different, something deliciously darker.

Maybe there is something of Music for the Masses and Violator about the track, as at times it places itself in a netherworld where rock and electronica meet.

But the song has a chiming primality about it that is subsumed into uneasy dreamscapes. Maybe a comparison to Drab Majesty would also be in order, but the brooding masculinity of Heaven is a State of Mind means it’ll never sit neatly in one box.

“I’ve always been of the opinion and feeling that our external reality is of our own design,” says Pictureplane. “The idea of ‘Heaven’ as not some sort of physical destination or place, but as a state of being within yourself. Nirvana, basically.”

“I suppose that is what the song is about. Producing this song, I was really sort of trying to write a song that sounded like Depeche Mode—a proper romantic, industrial goth pop song.”
