New Music: Pigeon – Mirror Test

Unless you have an irrational fear of pigeons (don’t ask), the cosmic disco-dub-funk of Mirror Test will be a delight.

Margate-based Pigeon trip the light fantastic on Mirror Test, a song that has roots in three continents but is delivered in a very English and understated style. The band pull together sounds in inventive ways, thanks to the Afrocentric vocals of Falle Nioke, and in how the feline take on P-Funk amplifies the spacey feel of the track. With nods to Queen and acid house in the arrangement the quintet launch the song way beyond the atmosphere thanks to a Gang Of Four beat.

Add in a video that could easily have appeared on the eccentric pop shows of Italy in the 70s and 80s, and you’ll appreciate that Pigeon are no ordinary band, and neither is their music. With their OUTTANATIONAL album on the way, this is a great introduction to the band’s sound.

OUTTANATIONAL is out on the 1st of May via Memphis Industries and is now up for pre-order on Bandcamp. The band have live dates in London and Manchester in the coming weeks and plays Margate on the day of the album’s release. Check out Pigeon’s Instagram for more details.

Pigeon are Falle Nioke, Graham Godfrey, Steve Pringle, Tom Dream, and Josh Ludlow.
