New Music: Queen Cult – To Be A Boy
Gender, identity, and how society affects the way an individual deals with those concepts are at the heart of To Be A Boy, the latest single from Queen Cult.
You can hear a lot of Garbage and Cherry Glazerr in the arrangement as it navigates its way through pop-friendly rock licks and an emotionally powerful vocal performance.
The no-filter honesty of the lyrics are matched by a visceral intensity that drives To Be A Boy along, so that even though it relays a very personal experience, that sense of dislocation within the world will be familiar to many of us listening.

Speaking about To Be A Boy, vocalist Maisie says, ““This song is super personal to me and based on my experiences growing up, I hope this resonates with anyone who had similar experiences. It was written about growing up with the confusion of wanting to be a boy, when in reality I came to the realisation that I just wanted the freedom that boys had growing up.”

“It’s also about the misconception that when I hung around boys, I should fancy them – but I just didn’t! Navigating a world as AFAB was, and still is, pressured with multiple expectancies in behaviour followed by rules. This is my experience of that. I hope it sticks with you.”
To Be A Boy can be downloaded on Bandcamp and streamed on Spotify and Apple Music. It’ll also feature on the band’s upcoming Be Better EP.
Queen Cult are in the middle of a series of live and festival appearances, so check them out on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for gigs news, plus updates on Be Better.
