New Music: Scout – Rather Be Blind

London-based Scout says they played in bands throughout much of their teenage years but always felt more drawn to writing and pop music. Pop is undoubtedly better off that they followed their instincts, as you can hear on Rather Be Blind.

It’s only their second single, but there’s a maturity and composure to the song that’ll send shivers up your spine. It draws on 80s synthpop and the reflective end of Scandinavian electronica. However, it does so in an intimate, torch singer style, pain wrapped up in a catchy chorus that gives the song a subtle but devastating quality.

Scout says, “I wrote this one over a beat I found on YouTube last year. It kinda lives in the same world as the other songs on the first Scout EP and is centered round moving back to North London/Enfield. I speak multiple languages and I heard this line that translated to ‘I rather be blind than see my life without you’ and right away knew I wanted that line in a song.”

They add, “It worked out with the rest of the lyrics, so I literally just took it and used it. The song’s quite nostalgic, about situationships and not realising what you have until you no longer have it. I want Scout to make people feel a little less lonely in their human experience.”
