New Music: Secret Shame – Dissolve

Asheville’s Secret Shame are regulars on the blog now, with this being their fourth visit, most recently with Gift late last year. New track Dissolve is one of their best yet, and they’ve created a suitably reflective video for the song.

Secret Shame’s music is one of the hidden gems of the current alternative music scene, but Dissolve shows why that cult status is something that really needs to be remedied. The band are inventive, but also have developed a very distinctive, delicate sound. It’s full of resonances from the 80s, but with a vivid sharpness and energy.

This sets them apart not just from the music of that era, but also the modern day take on the music of that time. Dissolve is a majestic track, one where classic Manchester indie embraces post-punk punchiness and Gothic levels of emotion; like Pale Waves but without the glossy pop sheen.

Lena from the band calls Dissolve “a cathartic break from a bad situation, but a gateway to something still destructive. What are the benefits of nobody knowing what’s on your mind? What are the drawbacks?”
