New Music: Softie – Kiss Kiss Kiss

Ahead of the release of their SOMERSAULT EP next month, Oakland’s Softie have dropped featured track Kiss Kiss Kiss – and an accompanying video.

The band, fronted by Nicholas Coleman, takes their signature sound of blissed-out slacker rock with a lo-fi feel for a welcome spin here.

Though the combination may come across as polar opposites on paper, Kiss Kiss Kiss feels as influenced by the shoegaze of My Bloody Valentine as it does the No Wave noise of Sonic Youth.

There’s a seemingly smooth surface at first listen, but when you peer just below that fuzzed-out veneer and chilled vocals, some barely-concealed jagged riffs and loops entrap you in the song’s melodious abstractions. It won’t fit into any neat boxes, but for me, that’s a lot of its charm.
