New Music: talker – Gold Rush

“It’s not a gold rush; it’s a dustbowl,” sings talker, on the unfiltered rawness of her latest single, Gold Rush.

Even though the song offers you some emotional respite in its latter third, Gold Rush is rock and roll with a leftfield and vivid edge, as only a song that mentions “bleeding out on a double yellow” can be.

The track speaks to dualities you can often hear in talker’s music: her PJ Harvey-adjacent vocals, and how she uses that to deliver strong images of lyrics in the vein of Kate Bush. Does it sound anything like those two artists? Not really – it’s that talker comes from a similar place creatively, making music that is meant to move you, enthral you, and make you think.

States talker about the importance of the song for her: “Gold Rush is the first single from my next album – and the thesis statement of the record. After touring supporting Wheatus last year for my last record, I’m thrilled to finally share this body of work.”

Gold Rush is available to stream on Bandcamp and Spotify. Keep in the loop with talker and updates on her new LP by following her on Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook.
