New Music: Tan Cologne – Cloud of Mirrors

I occasionally wonder if a physical location can affect the music a band makes. That thought reoccurred when I first heard Cloud of Mirrors.

The most recent song from Tan Cologne – duo Lauren Green and Marissa Macias – must surely be influenced by the dry heat and wide-open spaces of their New Mexico home, given its heady mix of shoegaze and psychedelia.

Slowly paced, as if under the dry, cloudless skies of an endless summer, Cloud of Mirrors has a parched energy all of its own. Though deserts and skies can teem with life just outside our knowledge, the surface of Cloud of Mirrors does yield its beautiful secrets to the listener.

The band says about the lyrics, “Cloud of Mirrors is about life happening to you and having to deal with whatever is handed to you – a chemtrail above, being ‘over it,’ knowing we are all interconnected and a part of the disaster and the beauty.”

“The idea that we are a mirrored image of the sky – manmade or natural, or even simulated. A reflection of everything around you being internally present.”

Cloud of Mirrors will feature on the band’s third studio album, Unknown Beyond, which is set for release on the 20th of June via Labrador Records.

For all the latest album news, and details of a launch party in Marfa, Texas, follow the band on Instagram. The album can be pre-ordered on Bandcamp.
