New Music: The Dharma Chain – Red Red Red Red Red

It’s the ghostly repetition of Red Red Red Red Red that excites and unnerves you, as The Dharma Chain test the boundaries of shoegaze, rock, and psych.

The song, from the Berlin-based Australian band’s Some Kind of Pure State LP, taps into the dark and gritty aesthetic of their adopted hometown; a doomy bass line giving the vocal performances a suitably menacing background.

While the band’s shoegaze-influenced sound keeps something of a presence here, it has been transmuted into a sound that owes something to post-punk and post-rock, Bauhaus in Berlin, laden with atmosphere but keeping a sharp focus on the role of the melody to drive a song forward.

The Dharma Chain are currently in the midst of a European tour, with dates in Spain, France, and the Netherlands on the remaining schedule. They also appear at Fuzz Club Festival in Eindhoven, the first weekend in May.
