New Music: Unlettered – Leave Behind

There’s a rich seam of creative and combustible material on Five Mile Point, the new album from Florida-based Unlettered. Leave Behind is a perfect example of its vivid and visceral soundscapes.

The nominally post-punk project, helmed by multi-instrumentalist Mike Knowlton, breaks down the norms of the genre in thrilling fashion.

Woking here with his wife and fellow musician Kelly Grimm, the band pressurises the inherent dark and angular essences of post-punk until their shapes and forms bend but never fracture.

More menacing than haunting, Leave Behind remains highly rhythm-focused, but expresses that through some wonderfully dissonant guitar, dark riffs, and incisive vocals.
