New Music: Whales & This Lake – happy liar

  • New Music: Whales & This Lake - happy liar

Oslo’s Whales & This Lake take a trip in more way that one with new release happy liar and its accompanying video. Prepare for an unusual audio and visual journey, then check out the video directed by Jonas Lien Svartstad and Magnus Borka Kloster-Jensen.

The disturbing, disorienting vibe to the video is perfectly in tune with the unsettling ambience of the song, delivering up a real sense of numbing, but a strangely pleasant feeling of dissonance and dislocation.

Just as the video deconstructs what we expect of a neon Tokyo and night, so the song does the same with a more mainstream indie-electro-pop sound, hooks and melody to the fore but turned inside out, torn apart and put back together in a tricky, trippy way that demands the listener pays attention.

happy liar is out now via Koke Plate and is available on Spotify and all major digital outlets – click on the link at the top of the article for more details, or find out more on the band’s Facebook page.
