New Music: YZBL – Dust

Industrial is a wide genre, from electronica to rock, but these days, it’s rare to hear someone go back to its origins in either branch to find something new and vital to say.

YZBL (pronounced Jezebel) who set out a similarly bleak and beautiful tonal palette on recent single Patterns, lets Dust keep to an almost traditional song narrative – though there is no real room or need for a standard chorus here. Deep within its DNA you can detect scattered atoms of The Second Annual Report, as YZBL layers them under oppressive rock and proto-trip-hop textures that wouldn’t be out of place on early 90s Aphex Twin.

With distorted vocals, guitar-like samples, and jackhammer beats being the main allowances to what defines much of modern industrial music, Dust treads a delicately balanced and addictively hypnotic path that indicates their upcoming Hermaphrodite LP could easily find fans with industrial’s many strands.
