New Music: Bonander – Backseat
Ellinor Sterner Bonander is the musician behind Bonander, and what is possibly one of the most fantastic song titles ever – Quit Everything and Become a Princess. You can read what we thought of it here. Her new single Backseat is a more intimate affair but has just as much impact.
While Backseat carries the same emotional intensity and rich electronic tones of Princess, here Bonander gives them a very personal and intimate feel. Confessional, image-laden lyrics lay out a story that feels tinged with sadness, even as Bonander sings of comforting memories and safer times. The passage of time, the unspoken heartache in the vocals, and the strings’ tension add an air of uncertainty or maybe one of warning, like a fairy tale in the form of a song.
Says Ellinor, “This song is about growing up and the unwillingness to see the world as it is. As a kid you would fall asleep in the backseat of your family’s car, with that comforting feeling. The night wasn’t scary, it was just…safe. Now, you have to walk home alone with the keys in your fist, looking over your shoulder.”
Bonander adds that she’s currently working on a new album, Things We Don’t Talk About. She adds that it will be about “the stories of women both from history and her personal life whose contributions have previously been overlooked.”
Backseat is out now via Icons Creating Evil Art, and it can also be streamed on Apple Music and Spotify. Head over to her Facebook and Instagram pages for more listening and downloading options.
