New Music: La Femme – Cool Colorado
We last covered the French collective La Femme when they collaborated with designer Hedi Slimane on the twenty-minute soundscape of Runway. They return with the more conventional though just as pop perfection of Cool Colorado.
The song is unsurprisingly chock full of Gallic flair and class, but with a psychedelic thread running through it, plus the very American concept of the road trip. Brassy and evocative of the 60s and 70s both in sound and spirit, but with lyrics that could only really happen in 2020, Cool Colorado is a deeply a terrific, trippy time warp of a tune.
“Cool Colorado alludes to freedom, the insouciance of a journey,” the band explains. “We were somewhere between the states of Utah and Wyoming, during our last American tour, when this ode to the San Francisco of the 70s, which is so rare and precious to us even if we never lived in this period, came to us.” They go on to say, “Colorado is the first American state which legalized cannabis, this is where the line ‘And I smoke in the streets without stress’ comes from,” La Femme adds. “This song is also related to the Beatnik spirit, to the literature of Kerouac. Do you remember the Magic Bus? It was going from Europe to Kathmandu on a now-mythical hippie trail.”
Cool Colorado is out now and available to stream on all major music platforms, including Apple Music and Spotify. Be sure to check the band out over on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram to keep up with news about the La Femme and their music. The band is currently working on a new album.
