New Music: The Killers – boy

Masters of the quiet anthem, The Killers have hit the target once again with the sweet melancholy of their new single, boy. The track was written before last year’s Pressure Machine album, but shows the band is on a fine run of form right now.

The Las Vegas indie stalwarts give the vocals of Brandon Flowers pride of place on boy. Overflowing with emotion, Flowers brings out the layered message of the lyrics with his subtle phrasing of each line, entrancing the listener.

The upbeat post-punk sound that many associate with The Killers is tempered with shades of darkwave and Italo and pop here. If ABBA ever did guitar-based pop, it might sound like boy. It’s an indie sad-pop banger of a tune .
