Introducing: TIFFY

Introducing: TIFFY

Published On: October 9th, 2023|

We’ve covered TIFFY a few times in recent months, so the release of Don’t Take It Personally seemed like a good opportunity to catch up with the Boston-based musician. The track will also feature on their upcoming forthcoming album So Serious.

Could you tell us something about TIFFY the person?

TIFFY is me, Tiffany. I write/compose everything for the project and do a lot of the recording and production. I love watching food network TV shows/competition cooking shows. I love to cook, but not at a high chef level. I also just started playing Minecraft and wish I could start a band in Minecraft.

What drives you to create music?

Music is a refuge for me. I started TIFFY to let off steam from a day job I hated. I use songwriting to process feelings, heal from trauma, or note random observations about the world.

Which comes come: words or music?

Music is usually the stronger component for me, but with my most recent album I’d say it was half and half between the words or music coming first.

You grew up in California but now live in Boston. Has that mix of upbringing and location had an influence on your sound?

I feel like music was everywhere for me growing up in California, and not just surf music. Of course, the same mainstream music existed on both coasts, but the diversity of underground music in California was a lot of different from Boston/east coast, and that was a huge influence for me. A lot of straightforward punk and ska (So Cal) versus hardcore and emo (Boston). Growing up in California is definitely a huge influence on my sound.

Is there any artist or producer you’d love to work with?

I would love to work with Sarah Tudzin of Illuminati Hotties and Melina Duterte of Jay Som. Both of their producing and music are very influential to me!

What was the last song/album you listened to?

Rosie Tucker, Tiny Songs Vol 1

What Boston bands should we be checking out right now?

Aznjujube, Astral Bitch, Connor Storms & His Bouquet, Daphne Blue Underworld, Dan Sweeney, Good June, Hey I’m Outside, Impossible Dog, Kind Being, Miss Geo, Miss Bones, Mk Naomi, Pushflowers, Roland High Life, See You At Rogers, Thrust Club, Today Junior, Orca Bones, oldsoul, Shallow Pools. I’m probably missing a bunch because there are a lot of really good Boston bands right now!!

Is there a specific story behind new single Don’t Take It Personally? The video has a very ‘comic book’ quality.

I wrote the song basically when someone decided they wanted to stop being friends and told me Don’t Take It Personally. I had the idea of there being a comic zine with this song that depicts a gameshow, because that’s kinda what a failing relationship feels like, like you’re racing to the buzzer all the time and you can’t win. So, there is a comic zine that will be available, and the video is animation of the actually comic graphics.

What’s up next for you in the wake of the single’s release?

I have an album called So Serious coming out Friday 11/3! I’ll have a couple more singles and videos released between then too. Going on a little northeast tour for the release.

So Serious will be released via Totally Real Records and Dollhouse Lightning, and is currently up for pre-order in cassette and digital formats on Bandcamp. For venue and ticket info on upcoming live dates in locations including Boston, Brooklyn, and Providence (RI), hit up TIFFY’s Facebook and Instagram socials.
