New Music: Lein Sangster – History Repeatin’

Though they’ve been making music as part of acts like KIT and Bad Anorak 404, In Spite of Everything, The Stars is actually the solo debut album from Lein Sangster.

While the subject matter of the lyrics is both reflective and contemplative – looking at the past with an eye for the future – the track revels in classic sounds that are closely associated with the north of England.

That comes through in the way the melody is driven forward by Northern Soul motifs, but also that take on indie music exemplified by the likes of Paul Heaton and The Lathums.

History Repeatin’ may explore difficult emotional terrain, but Sangster does it so delicately and in such an emotionally literate style that you might learn something about yourself along the way.

Talking about the song, they’ve disclosed it’s centred on “Thinking about getting back with someone who you loved dearly but they were a nightmare to go out with, and now they’ve done some work on themselves, do you get back with them, can people change?
