New Music: Honey I’m Home – Soon

Soon isn’t a cover of the classic My Bloody Valentine track from the Loveless album, but Honey I’m Home might take some cues from the foundational rock band.

That comes to the fore in the nods to shoegaze in the guitars and the distracted delivery of the existential lyrics. You pick up that the song is rushing forward, excited and bursting with noise, and then silent except for the duality of gentle rain and thunderclaps.

The rain is here; the lightning isn’t mentioned but must be close by, the thunder momentarily overwhelming. I don’t know if it’s deliberate, but those few seconds where the weather dominates Soon could be a summary of the song. Heavy weather is echoed in the loud and sudden wall of noise that surrounds the listener, the soft rain comforting after that jolt to the synapses, where silence may swallow you whole.

Offering insight into the lyrics, the band disclosed, “Soon is about always reaching for something just out of grasp. The next thing that will make you happy, already replaced before you get there.”

“[It’s] about wanting something you can’t get. Musically we tried to push our dynamics to the max: it goes from really quiet to really loud, which is probably our favourite thing about it.

“Jasper spent an unreasonable amount of time tweaking everything to get it just right, and we’ve never been happier with a recording.”

“There’s a lot more coming from that room we recorded the song in, including a video we’re very excited about. but for now, go listen to soon!”

You can find Soon on Bandcamp, where you can also find the last few vinyl copies of their June single, Hyperspace Mountain / Sign of the Times, which was released by the supercool Paradiso Vinyl Club that’s part of the iconic club and live venue.

Honey I’m Home play their hometown of Amsterdam on the 30th of December and have announced European dates for March ’27. Head to Instagram and TikTok for details on those live dates plus new gigs and music.
