New Music: Just Kids – best friend

Just Kids – Rachel Still and Maxie Cheer – just released their saccharine EP, and we loved the sweet, sad sounds of best friend.

The track doesn’t easily fit into one genre, but it will easily find a place in your heart. There’s a strong dream pop presence in the arrangement and vocals sure, and I’m certainly here for that. But fans of Fleetwood Mac and Sharon Van Etten (also me!) will have flickers of recognition in the way Still and Cheer evoke 70s AOR, but with a keen eye for the ups and downs of life and love.

“I wrote the song after I had to move house suddenly,” says Just Kids guitarist/vocalist Still. “Everything felt really odd, and the view from my shower always made me laugh as I kept thinking I could see the moon and then would realise it was the Wood Green mall sign.”

“It made me reflect upon a lost friendship and how much had changed in my life that this person would never know about, but then in return how much must’ve changed for them too.”

Just Kids’ saccharine EP was released on the 10th of July and can be heard on Bandcamp, YouTube Music, and Spotify. There is also a limited-edition lyric zine for saccharine, designed by Still and featuring visuals relating to each of the EP’s seven songs, which you can pick up on Bandcamp.
