New Music: Girl As Wave – Your Movie

Marci Elizabeth’s Girl As Wave project teams up once again with Jimmy Dear, this time on the bittersweet electropop of Your Movie.

The New York based artist delivers something close to an Anglophone soundscape on Your Movie, one where nostalgia meets reality head-on. Lyrically it doesn’t pull any punches, as it details a relationship that is seemingly founded on wishes, fantasy, and misconception. That fairy tale shine slowly fades away, however; the reference to Mulholland Drive makes me wonder if the amnesia and noirish features of David Lynch’s of that name hint as to what is happening ‘off-screen’ within the song.

And as for that Anglophone aspect? You could easily imagine Dubstar or Saint Etienne wishing they had written Your Movie, due to its pervading aura of genteel nostalgia, though fans of Scandi-poppers Sally Shapiro will equally find a lot to love in the arrangement and vocals.

Says Elizabeth about Your Movie and its lyrics, “It’s about being in a relationship with someone who only sees the version of you they have imagined. I consider it a companion track to [previous release] Good Fiction.”
