New Music: Kirrilee – Go Away (Garbage Tip)

Australian pop provocateur Kirrilee cloaks a pointed message within the playful pop tones of Go Away (Garbage Tip).

Melbourne-based Kirrilee delves into the pitfalls of dating and relationships, but does so via lyrics that are blessed with real wit and savage lines. If you’re a fan of Golden Hour, the 2018 album from Kacey Musgraves, you’ll find Kirrilee very much to your tastes.

The arrangement is soft and pristine; the melody is pop with a quiet and incisive bite. The youthful and understated pop-soul charm of Kirrilee’s vocals adds to the tracks’ stiletto sharpness, taking down idiots and exes with a deadly smile, reminiscent of CMAT at her most cutting and charming.

Go Away (Garbage Tip) turns my weirdest dating experiences into a light-hearted breakup anthem,” says Kirrilee. “Sometimes the best thing you can do is laugh, move on, and take the garbage out.”

“I’ve had enough weird dating experiences to write a whole album, but [this song] felt like the perfect place to start. I wanted to capture the humour in those situations and turn the chaos into something fun.”

“A lot of my music is deeply emotional, but this time I wanted to lean into my sense of humour and write an unapologetically playful breakup anthem that people could laugh, sing and heal along with. It’s cheeky, but also serves as a reminder that sometimes the best thing you can do is laugh, move on, and take the garbage out.”

Go Away (Garbage Tip) is definitely the song I’ve laughed the most to whilst writing. It’s a tongue-in-cheek breakup anthem about finally letting go of someone who should’ve stayed in the garbage where you found them.”
