The summertime sadness of JUST KIDS could easily see tbh living up to their slogan of being “your favorite LA boy band.”

With relatable and memorable lyrics, it appears at first to focus on youthful memories. You know the ones, the kind where everything seems so perfect: your heart is full of love and fit to burst; it can be viewed as a celebration of good times.

Overlaid on a hook-heavy melody and blessed with a vocal that borders on angelic, it’s gently threaded with a faint sense of regret and loss as well. The phrase “prisoners of the night” within the lyrics can be viewed as a double-edged sword, raising the question of whether that feeling was good or bad. You can take the song and its bright and hazy electronic pop sheen as just that and not more. But dig under the surface, and you might find something different.
