Mixtape Sessions Episode 5: Kat Bryan

This playlist is a cross section of my evolution as an audiophile, as well as an artist. I first started developing my own taste in music in the early to mid-90s when alt rock, grunge and an angsty form of feminism were on the rise.

Women with things to say and a “sick of this shit” attitude were hugely influential to me aesthetically as well as emotionally. In my early 20s I worked for a performing arts centre while in University so I was exposed to a lot of classical and nouveau classical artists, like Christina Vantzou, Olafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm. In my 30s I developed a taste for something I swore in my teen years was the worst form of music; electronic music.

Where once I believed if it didn’t have traditional instruments it wasn’t music, now I was being exposed to artists like Moderat, Henry Green, LAMB and Imogen Heap who were doing such interesting things with synths and midi and effects that it really changed my perspective on how music is created. Lastly, I included The Cure because I could not call myself any kind of goth without paying homage the legendary Robert Smith.

This playlist shows my evolutionary journey as an artist and music lover, but is also a great introduction to the sounds that inspired Music for the End of the World. In just over an hour you will hear my passion for pianos and contemporary composing, my dark and foreboding goth roots, and even my synth-laden electronic production.  All artists are an amalgamation of those who came before, and these are just a few of the very talented people I have drawn my inspiration from.
