New Music: PHEA – Ride Or Die

The music of Berlin/Los Angeles based singer, songwriter, artist, and producer PHEA comes from a deeply personal place, but the message of Ride Or Die is one many of us will recognise.

PHEA’s music is flavoured by the diagnosis and treatment of a chronic health issue, and on Ride Or Die, she looks at how that affects relationships. The lyrics evidence a keen observational eye as well as an awareness of the nuances of relationships in all their forms, especially ones affected by trauma.

Ride Or Die is downtempo but not downbeat, a quiet but affirming celebration of love, family and friends, and triumphing over the odds. The spoken-word passage at the heart of the track is incredibly moving, a strong and poignant message that will live on in your memory.

Says PHEA, “One of my biggest fears has always been walking home at night, not because of the dark, but because if something happened, I literally couldn’t run. The last time I tried to run in fear (in 2009), I went into cardiac arrest.”

“I wrote this song about a dream I had when I was younger: the world was ending, and everyone I loved had to run to safety. But I couldn’t, so they had to leave me behind. And I didn’t want anyone to risk their life for me.”

“It took me a long time to realize that dream wasn’t just about fear; it was about how I saw myself. For years, I felt like a burden because of my heart condition. Like I wasn’t worth staying for. But then I met someone who would stay with me, even if the world was ending.”

The song will feature on Flowers on Caskets, PHEA’s upcoming EP, which is set for release on the 22nd of August. Ride Or Die is streaming on all popular streaming platforms, including Spotify, Deezer, and YouTube Music. Keep up with EP news on the artist’s Instagram and Facebook feeds.
