New Music: JOURNEYGLO – Limp By Your Side

JOURNEYGLO is the daughter of a Korean pastor, and the confessional folk of Limp By Your Side marks the evolving role of her faith and friendship within her music.

On the surface, the lyrics of the title track of her new album would appear to be a story of maintaining ties with others as you evolve as a person. It details change though a series of everyday images, quiet, domestic in nature.

They could just as easily be an allegory for faith, however – its nature can change, so can its degree – but the bond is still there, underneath everything, enduring. That growth can be heard in the lyrics and arrangement, ever more expansive and growing in confidence as the song resolves itself.

JOURNEYGLO wrote Limp By Your Side while working on her own struggles and also being able to be there for her friends and loved ones.

“I had just come out of some deeply honest conversations with close friends, some who were going through really heavy, personal struggles,” she discloses.

“I was also walking through a hard season of my own, carrying things I didn’t fully know how to talk about yet. This song emerged as a ‘Hey, I might be limping in life too, but if it’s OK with you, I’d still love to walk beside you.’”

That process also coincided with a reappraisal about how to express herself within music, as well as the things she wanted to write about.

“I never want to bash Christian music. I honor where it is then, now, and how it has evolved,” she adds. “That said, I wanted to explore topics that could be taboo, and I didn’t want to feel boxed in.”
