New Music: EMMON – Shades of Blue

EMMON works her love for the music of Depeche Mode and the visuals of Anton Corbijn into the video for Shades of Blue from her ICON album.

Even as Shades of Blue looks towards EBM and post-punk for its sonic palette, there are some hard-to-spot homages to that period in the 80s when electronic bands adopted more of a rock aesthetic.

It is, however, very much an EMMON song: a dark dance number with an electronic eye on the alternative club scene, but fiercely and undeniably human in its message, in keeping with the sound and style of ICON as an album.

“Shades of Blue is a tribute to my teenage self, a time when I had just fallen passionately in love with alternative and electronic music,” states EMMON. “It was the era when Depeche Mode, The Cure, and The Smiths were constantly playing on my Walkman. As an emotional and searching young person growing up in a small town, I often felt like I didn’t quite fit in,” she adds.

“Music became my salvation, a gateway to another world that eventually helped me realize my dreams. In the lyrics of Shades of Blue, I speak to my inner teenager, the one who felt misunderstood. I say, ‘I see you. It will get better.’”

Shades of Blue features on ICON, which was released on the 17^th of October via Icons Creating Evil Art and is available in vinyl, CD, and digital options on Bandcamp. It’s also streaming on Spotify and YouTube Music.
