EP Review: Terror Terror – Made of Parts

Terror Terror are set to break out of the Thai underground rock scene, if their Made of Parts EP is anything to go by.

The Thai-American quintet formed in 2023, and since then, they have released a series of singles that focus on an art-rock sound but look outwards for inspiration in terms of their lyrics.

That is immediately apparent on Rhododendron, a piledriver of a track that starts off the EP in a visceral and – just as importantly – lyrically cutting fashion. As the lyrics track the overflowing cloaca of violence that we are being presented with on our streets and on our screens, the band are equally relentless.

What gives Rhododendron such a powerful effect on the listener is the breadth and depth of sound that Terror Terror achieve here: a tight interstellar groove that Can or Neu! would die for. It’s the fulcrum for an arrangement that ellipses from Sonic Youth’s fuzzy No Wave to a heavy take on the post-punk of Sprints. The latter is amplified in fierce style by the resemblance that vocalist Rosalie Wilmot has to Carla Chubb – no quarter given and none expected.

Rhododendrons are not a threat when kept contained, but when allowed to spread, they can destroy and overtake their environment – a suitable title for this song, then.

A No Wave influence can also be heard on Dune Bug Death Safari, as Juckchai Sepanon and Nicholas Shuminsky on drums and Chanwut Kamkanya on bass generate a darkened rock aesthetic that got me thinking of Karate, Guns and Tanning, who work with similar soundscapes.

Thanks to the lead guitar of Michael O. and the voice of Rosalie Wilmot, here and on the increasingly experimental textures of warped-out psychedelia/krautrock of Ugly Mountain and the heavy lo-fi rock rumble of Parts People, the band finds a perfect balance time after time, quite a feat when each contribution by each band member is flawless.

There’s so much to love about Made of Parts – from the fire of the vocals and having two drummers to harnessing a creativity that has whispers of Osees’ opaque rock, the unpredictability of Sonic Youth, and the no-fucks-given directness of Sprints, all via kosmische rhythms, on this fat-free four-song EP of (un)holy noise.
