New Music: 37 Houses – Eye For an Eye

Eye For an Eye sees San Francisco’s 37 Houses build on the success of last October’s Strangers EP.

The new single serves as an introduction to the band’s sophomore album, When and How it Happened, and shows that 37 Houses have a sound that can effortlessly embody the punk power of Against Me! and the fractured dynamism of Pixies and The Libertines.

There’s a tension in the spartan flow of the arrangement, but also the lyrics, one that vocalist Erin Sydney allows to drive the song along, low-key at times before bursting into a firestorm of noise and emotion.

In common with Strangers, Eye For an Eye is no-frills indie rock that nonetheless offers something new with every listen, shifting patterns in the guitar and percussion especially giving you something new to marvel at.

Centred around Jeremy Rosenblum and Erin Sydney, the band’s music has been described as the work of ‘an imperfect human married to another imperfect human,’ but the result of that is, well, kind of perfect in its own human and messy way, as they use it to express the joys and pains of being in a relationship. Rosenblum and Sydney view When and How it Happened as the next chapter in their story: written over 18 months about the process of learning to be, and not be, polyamorous in a developing marriage.
