New Music: Pet Owner – Piece of Gum

The warm tones of the arrangement don’t obscure the warning signs in the lyrics of Piece of Gum, the new track from Pet Owner.

Swiss singer-songwriter Lea Mathis, aka Pet Owner, employs a light and airy vocal style here, but the introspective lyrics more than hint at a sense of betrayal, emotional or otherwise.

The arrangement hints at some darker undertows, the folk/electro narrative giving way to a rock sound for seconds, pushing the chorus home to the listener. Piece of Gum has the folky and soulful pop appeal of tUnE-yArDs but from a more confessional direction, and also takes from the escapist electronic sounds of Air, which, for me at least, is a great place for a song to be.

Piece of Gum can be heard on Bandcamp and will appear on Pet Owner’s sophomore album, Second Nature, which is out on the 27th of February via Red Brick Records. For details on how to order the album, hit up Pet Owner on Instagram.
