There’s an initial sense of fragility to Drown, the new single from Cologne/Dusseldorf duo kamikaze, that is deliciously deceptive.

Led by light-touch vocals, their initial innocence soon adopts an exposed, almost bereft style, imparting lyrics that focus on love, pain, and the choices to be made around both.

Similarly, the dream pop elements within the arrangement are stripped away, the plaintive jangle of the guitar melody almost funereal, trending towards a bleak post-punk aesthetic. Soon the song pulls back to warmer climes, leaving you searching for a resolution within the lyrics. The band view Drown as an expression of ‘vulnerability can be a source of power,’ and for me, they embody that duality wonderfully.
