New Music: Fukushima Dolphin – Space Lift

There’s a lot to love about Space Lift, not least how it uses a guitar to mimic plaintive dolphin calls.

Brighton-based duo Fukushima Dolphin break genre boundaries and your concept of reality on Space Lift. The intro got me expecting futurepop, and that cosmic mysticism does have a presence in the arrangement, especially the synths. Its dominant mix of post-punk, psychedelia, and stream-of-consciousness lyrics is very easy on the ear, yet unlike much you are likely to hear in 2026, if ever. And that is a big part of the fun of the song, as is deciphering the meaning of lyrics – I didn’t succeed on that score.

The easiest way I can think to explain Space Lift is to encourage you to imagine what Henge would sound like if they decided to make a leftfield indie-pop banger. Not sure how likely that is, but this track will fill a gap in your music collection and heart that you didn’t even know existed.
