New Music: Loreen – Coming Close
Not many artists can combine winning Eurovision (twice!) with establishing themselves as a serious artist: Coming Close typifies the musical mystery at the heart of Loreen.
The track heralds the release of her Wildfire album and typifies what makes the Swedish artist both a pop diva and an experimental electronic artist. Coming Close takes some inspiration from EDM but also has a similar atmosphere-laden approach to Röyksopp. The Wildfire album has been a decade in the making, and maybe that is why you can hear subtle references to Euphoria and Tattoo within the mix, possibly Loreen marking herself as not just a survivor but as a triumphant pop queen.
“Even in a world that can feel distorted, there is something true rising underneath it all,” states Loreen about the song. “For me, Coming Close is about learning to see beyond that distortion, and realising that everything around us is alive, connected, and rooted in love. It’s a collective awakening, something subtle but powerful, and you can feel it getting closer and closer.”
Wildfire is out now via Polydor France and is available in a range of physical formats, including CD, as well as three sumptuous vinyl editions: Day, Dusk and Midnight.
You can stream Wildfire on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music. Loreen will embark on a series of European dates from Dublin to Amsterdam via Warsaw and Berlin later this year – head to her Facebook, TikTok, or Instagram for ticket and venue info.
