New Music: Mirrorball – Devil Mirror

Southern California based singer-songwriter Alexandra Johnstone and composer Scott Watson were solo artists before forming Mirrorball.

The two obviously have an intuitive understanding of each other’s creative strengths, as Devil Mirror is the sound of a duo perfectly in sync with each other, creatively.

They’ve described the song as being about “a moment of not quite recognizing yourself, but knowing there’s still something worth holding onto,” and the lyrics encapsulate this beautifully.

Johnstone’s voice exudes the aching pain of realising it’s you that has changed, while the lyrics give the listener enough room to establish their own narrative as to whether the song is about a relationship with another or a coming to terms with the self.

The arrangement gently underpins the softly glowing moment of enlightenment, dream pop with a haze of 80s pop and soft rock to it. Johnstone has a distinctive voice, with notes of Stevie Nicks and Trish Keenan, but she allows the lyrics pride of place here, allowing their message and emotional impact to be the heart of the track.
