New Music: French Fry – Black Whole

With a title like Black Whole, you can expect – and indeed get – a playful and incisive track laden with post-punk resonances.

Though Athens-based French Fry was inspired to make music as a fan of acts like Fontaines D.C., Idles, and Getdown Services, the sound of Black Whole is more polished and less angular than the work of those bands.

With a laconic melody that leaps back to Smells Like Teen Spirit but reimagines it as a power ballad for the damned, the song will appeal to fans of those bands for sure, but if you’re into the anti-pop of Artemas and the rumbling electro apocalypse of Boy Harsher, you’ll appreciate the deftly delivered and devastating wit of Black Whole.
