New Music: Josefin Öhrn – Cherry Tree

Josefin Öhrn may have assembled an impressive supporting cast for her debut solo album, but her voice and lyrics will be the real stars.

Cherry Tree heralds the release of her Cherry album later this year, featuring appearances from indie icons Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream, Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Andy Bell of Ride.

Öhrn immerses herself in a markedly different sound from her work with Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation, the avant-psych rock of that band colouring the arrangement, but the essence of Cherry Tree is more in tune with conceptual lo-fi and dream pop. The lyrics contain strong images of rebirth but also regret, change and longing, making me wonder if they were inspired by the works of Anton Chekov.

It’s not easy to pinpoint where the dreamy indie and Americana of the track have their origins, but if you like Charlotte Gainsbourg, The Velvet Underground, and rock-era Primal Scream, it’s certain that Cherry will be well worth investigating.

“When you fall in love with someone who isn’t available, that bittersweet experience”, she reveals about Cherry Tree, “Haven’t we all experienced that?”

She adds about the album, “It began as fragments of reflections and evolved into a body of work shaped by transformation. A document of endings and awakenings.” She personally asked musician, composer, and producer Kalle Jerneholm Gustavsson, who she had worked with previously, to take on production duties for the album.

“We recorded it in his studio, Svenska Grammofonstudion, Gothenburg. It’s an amazing studio where artists can stay, so I was totally living the album, breathing music every waking and sleeping hour as I was far away from my everyday life in London. It was a beautiful experience.”
