New Music: Freedom Fry – She Fell in Love on the Dance Floor

This wonderfully named song by Freedom Fry gets some added piquancy once you hear those opening notes.

Maybe it’s to be expected that the Los Angeles based Franco-American duo, Bruce Driscoll and Marie Seyrat, would throw us a pleasantly confounding and catchy curveball, given that their music has featured in programmes as diverse as Paradise on Hulu and Yo Gabba GabbaLand! on Apple TV+.

The lyrics evoke nights spent on the dancefloor and the casting off of inhibitions, the underplayed repetition of the track’s title capturing being caught in the moment when love happens. What gives it a sweet dissonance, comparable in fact to suddenly falling love, is how Driscoll and Seyrat relay that to the listener in such a smooth, sophisticated lo-fi dream pop style.

It does build to an understated euphoria, one that fades out with strings and Seyrat’s sweetly-phrased delivery, leaving you wanting to hear more about what happens next in the story of the song’s protagonist. I guess Freedom Fry have picked up some ideas from the TV industry, and when the result is as good as this, why not!
