New Music: Elastic Skies – Constant Departs

Vienna-based Elastic Skies merge the electronic and organic on Constant Departs, a song that exists where land and sea meet.

The second single from their upcoming concept EP III, which the band says explores Marc Augé’s theory of ‘non-places,’ Constant Departs is their audio imagining of the metronomic automation of a container port. Silence does a lot of work here; the synths and percussion are sparse enough to evoke the eeriness of environments where humanity is at a minimum but still a required presence.

The lead guitar can be viewed as the otherwise-unheard waves of the living sea lapping against a quayside populated by machinery and monotony; the vocals of Nora Blöchl have a fractured humanity that renders their presence distant and disembodied, all the while remaining a vital element.

It may make Constant Departs sound heavily conceptual, but the duo ensure that the song keeps a strong but loose orbit around a dark wave / post-punk melody to be relatable and far from abstract, evoking comparisons with Boy Harsher, La Femme, and Deux.
