New Music: TIFFY – Memorial Timeline

Ahead of the release of her fifth EP, Divine Hand, the quietly acerbic and insightful TIFFY gets real with social media on Memorial Timeline.

TIFFY (Tiffany Sammy) adopts a deadpan and deadly serious, slightly disbelieving tone as she recites life events from the mundane to the moving, as if reading them out in real time from a social media feed. Cleverly done, it brings home the dulling effect of too much information, all the time, within context or meaning.

Memorial Timeline has a chilled air to it, lo-fi and fuzzed out, reinforcing that suspicion that all this consumption might be having a drug-like effect, turning pain into profit for some cartoon-villain zillionaire. And if the sound of Memorial Timeline strikes some familiar notes, that may be down to Sammy and her live band creating it under the guidance of Justin Pizzoferrato, known for his work with Dinosaur Jr., Pixies, Sonic Youth, and Sebadoh.

“What an absurd time it is, scrolling feeds,” says TIFFY, referring to the lyrics of Memorial Timeline. “I found out via Facebook [that] someone once close to me died; meanwhile, moments later, I see all these statuses, updates of people’s personal lives, meme pages like Alt National Park, fake clickbait, and that my grandpa got hacked again by the Ray-Ban scam. The flooding feeling of it all inspired me for this song.”
