New Music: Mink – Everything Is Silent Now

Though the title may evoke thoughts of crisp winter mornings, Berlin duo Mink wrap their new single in autumnal colours.

A taster for their Return To Sender album, Everything Is Silent Now is imbued with lyrics that could be interpreted as walking and talking you through the seasons, but could just as easily be taken as guiding you through a relationship, floating, almost rootless above the music.

The vocal delivery and the literate, observational nature of the lyrics have the flow and smoothness of Baxter Dury about them; by contrast, the arrangement has the opposite to his signature cocky confidence, instead finding common ground between mood-driven indie and melodic progressive rock. Mink explore fragility and impermanence here, the repetition of nature matched in the easy circular glow of the arrangement. It leaves us with an uncertain sadness hanging in suspension, like the browning leaf ready to fall in silence.
