New Music: OVRGRWN – Too Far Gone
Back in February, I described Heaven In Your Arms by OVRGRWN as ‘lusty Italo,’ and they exceeded that stylistic sensuality here.
Too Far Gone allows Danae Labraña to embrace the gothic diva side of her vocal range, the pounding analogue bass line and dark wave synths amping up the tension – if not outright psychological horror – of the lyrics. Along with bandmate Brandon Iljas, she creates an atmosphere worthy of Siouxsie Sioux or Zola Jesus at their prowling best, suddenly hushed as the consequences of the lyrics hit home.

Like Heaven In Your Arms, that lyrical narrative that quickly defines itself, you’ll not get many spoilers from me, though! There is still enough mystery in there, however, and a number of cinematic subconscious suggestions from the noirish pop of the synths, encouraging you to emotionally invest yourself in Too Far Gone. I love songs that are good to listen and dance to, as well as ones that are clever, encouraging me to create a wider picture – OVRGRWN score highly on both counts.
You can hear Too Far Gone and Heaven In Your Arms on Bandcamp and Spotify – hit up the band’s Facebook and Instagram socials for more listening options and details of that live appearance in San Francisco on the 29th of October.
