New Music: Alice Merton – Same Team

Alice Merton’s MINT album saw the Berlin-based musician become a chart fixture across Europe, garnering over a billion streams for its featured tracks. June sees the release of her sophomore album S.I.D.E.S., and after listening to Same Team it sounds like she’ll replicate that success.

Same Team is pop at its most glossy, catchy, and hook-laden, but there’s still an emotional depth and message to the song that will give it lasting appeal outside its chart run. The insightful lyrics are delivered in Merton’s trademark vocal style – pop with a strong alt.rock undercurrent – adding steel and self-belief to the message of heartbreak and drifting apart that lies at the centre of the song.

Alice says about the track, “Same Team is one of the first songs I wrote for the album. I had been going through a lot of personal and work-related conflicts. I felt like I had been pulled into worlds that I didn’t understand and having conversations with people in which we just didn’t speak the same language.”

She adds, “A team goes through ups and downs, but often pulls together to become even stronger-but in some cases it does the exact opposite. I started to question: what do I do if that team makes me doubt myself and the decisions that we make?”
