New Music: Alpha Pet – Mall of Death

With its release timed to coincide with Black Friday and the attendant orgy of consumerism, Mall of Death is social commentary at its sharpest.

Looking at shopping as a lifestyle and as an end in itself, Alpha Pet disassemble that superficiality to expose the horror that lies beneath. The bacchanalian edge of the song, as if Iggy Pop and David Bowie were trying to buy your soul to a Bauhaus beat, is irresistible and terrifying in its garage/post-punk swagger.

The band are fully aware of the irony of contradictions that lie within Mall of Death, knowing that they too are trying to sell you something, even if that is the idea that buying is not being.

Talking about the themes behind the lyrics, the band state, “Welcome to the mall of death, where you can enhance your life experience with everything from pills, weed and poisonous centipedes to plastic toys. All equally fun! All equally deadly!”
