New Music: Anne Bennett – Borrowed Skin

Borrowed Skin sees Salem, Massachusetts, Anne Bennett work with Matt McJunkins from A Perfect Circle on songwriting duties.

McJunkins also worked on the production side of the track, which may help account for the lush, funereal tones of the track, creating something fit to soundtrack a psychological horror movie. Bennett’s vocals give the song its gothic, dramatic centre, going hand in hand with the highly visual, incredibly stirring lyrics.

A story of love, betrayal, and possibly remorse unfolds in this tale that would be worthy of Poe or Lovecraft, flashbacks adding to the sombre, sensual air of despondence and decline that maintains a constant presence throughout Borrowed Skin. Play it often, but not too late at night – you never know what eldritch horrors you might summon!

Bennett describes Borrowed Skin as “…a gothic psychodrama told from the mind of a character losing themselves inside someone else’s life. There are themes of madness, possession, and ego-death [all] wrapped in cold, hypnotic melodies and a creeping sonic build that reflects the character’s mental collapse.”
