New Music: Bakakaï – Busy Girl

Parisian quartet Bakakaï gets into some abstract and lo-fi grooves on Busy Girl from their Bonbecs EP.

The band cites sources as diverse as Polish writer and playwright Witold Gombrowicz (their name is similar to one of his collections of short stories) as well as bands like Deerhoof and Ty Segall as being formative influences, which helps explain the cerebral anti-rock of Busy Girl.

The lyrics read like a psychological and sociological analysis, dense with subtext as they are delivered in a light vocal that has the storytelling quality of a young Suzanne Vega, one that flirts with an indie flow at times.

With an arrangement that is eclectic, from indie to prog and math, amplified with background vocals that are like whispered echoes of another world, this is a track that will challenge your preconceptions and whatever guardrails you set for yourself musically.
