New Music: Billy Cart – Advice for a Long and Superstitious Life

Culture and family play a large role in the witty indie/post-punk textures of Billy Cart’s latest single.

Advice for a Long and Superstitious Life finds the band reflecting on the superstitions and sayings of band member Billy Raffin’s Argentinian family. There’s obviously some Irish in there as well, because I recognise some of those sayings and superstitions from my own parents and grandparents!

Billy Cart looks back at family stories in an affectionate and humorous manner, exuding the warmth of remembrance, but I can also pick up a sense of sadness for times past.

The band bring similar sensations to bear on the arrangement; as its edginess and grungy take on indie and post-punk invite positive comparisons to Sprints and Just Mustard. Billy Cart share a similar creative pathway to those bands, with lyrics that are personal and honest but share a message in the lyrics that many of us will easily relate to. And remember, don’t wear socks to bed – you’ll get nightmares!
