New Music: BRDN – Unparalleled

I initially perceived Unparalleled as an ending, but it’s also actually a beginning as BRDN prepare for a new EP.

The first single from Maybe in another life, the title of the EP is a regular refrain in the lyrics, as the song develops into what the duo calls “a haunting, ethereal exploration of disillusionment and bittersweet acceptance.” The voices have a remove about them, as if not wanting to accept a parting that appears foretold, as both vocals seem closer the more the track evolves.

The song is piercingly on point in how it finds a moment where the present feels lost, the battle is over, and the hope is to find equilibrium and maybe contentment somehow, somewhere, sometime.

Unparalleled doesn’t make any concessions to a traditional pop narrative; it is more in tune with the work of James Blake, Fever Ray, or The xx, but that is what gives the track its doomily misty beauty.
