New Music: Catherine Brookman – If A Song Fades Out

The stunning, chanteuse-like voice of Catherine Brookman brings a jazz-aligned quality to the dreamy electronica of If A Song Fades Out – a track from her new album.

That exploration of jazz – and blues – also holds a strong role in the song overall, even as the percussion occasionally nods to trip-hop and the guitar to dream pop at times, creating a listening experience that is atmospheric and engrossing.

Says Brookman about the inventive accompanying video, which was recorded in 35mm, “So grateful to the brilliant people that brought the title track to life and gave it a perfect visual world to live inside. We wanted to explore all the different ways we present in the world – our inner selves, our outer selves and all the wild spaces in between.”

She adds of the album, “I took a train to Montreal on March 12th of 2020 right when the pandemic started. I packed a bag that was meant to last three days in the Montreal winter; I had turtlenecks, sweaters, and wool socks. That bag carried me through the following year and a half away from home.”

“I went directly from Montreal to Los Angeles, where I went through a breakup, rented a car, drove to Utah, lived in an Airstream on my friend’s family’s farm for a week, rented a truck, drove to Colorado, and was hiking 13 miles a day. I was spending a lot of time in nature and writing music. A lot of this record came out of this time as I was moving through heartbreak and wandering alone around the mountains in Colorado, New Mexico and Utah.”

Catherine Brookman releases her new album, If A Song Fades Out It’s Playing Forever Somewhere, on the 7th of November. For release news, head to Instagram or her website.
