New Music: Cigarettes for Breakfast – flowing

Cigarettes for Breakfast specialise in fusing classic shoegaze with alt-rock – something to the fore on flowing.

The third single from the Philadelphia band’s colour wheel EP, flowing looks to early My Bloody Valentine, Ringo Deathstarr, and Slowdive to waylay the listener with its peerless approach to sonic seduction; but it also expresses another side in the arrangement and lyrics.

Beautiful and beatific from a distance, there are dissonant notes fissuring the track, as if flowing wants you to flow with it in opposite directions, a placid surface just about obscuring riptides of emotion.

Very much the work of Cigarettes for Breakfast’s main man Matt Whiteford, the EP was written and recorded over the course of three years, yet feels so together, so fluid, you’d swear it was created in an instance of divine intervention.
