New Music: Creux Lies – Jubilate

A standout on the lineup at this weekend’s Wave-Gotik-Treffen event in Leipzig, Creux Lies are certain to delight audiences with Jubilate.

The Sacramento, California based quartet are gearing up for the release of their Jubilee album via Young & Cold Records with this icy blast of coldwave-infused post-punk that is counterintuitively destined to set dark-scene dance floors alight.

Jubilate is a hard track to pin down, perhaps intentionally so, given the lyrics. With a scope that runs from the minimal EBM of Nitzer Ebb to the woozily washed tones of The Murder Capital, it is tightly wound but barely remains so. The lyrics come from elsewhere, lost in uncertainty, but which is the reality of the song is up to the listener to decide.

Songs aren’t obliged to give you answers, and I’m left with questions, the biggest one for me being, can the band top this track?

It’s accompanied by a video that features a costumed bat finding its way from the cold of Vancouver to California’s sunny beaches and the streets of Hollywood. It’s funny and a bit at odds with what we might expect from a song that sounds like Jubilate, but it adds to the feelings of dislocation and disassociation within the lyrics.
